You’re sure to be thinking about the sunshine, beaches and great food once you’ve booked your Alcudia hotels for a Mallorcan holiday. The Mediterranean-style fare on the island is extremely tasty, but some of the more traditional dishes feature ingredients you might not be used to. Don’t let this put you off trying them though, as some of the best meals you’ll ever taste can be experienced with these recipes.

Despite not been everyone’s favourite thing to eat, the island is a great place to try offal. Featuring fried sweetbreads (liver), potatoes and other vegetables, Frit Mallorqui, also known as Freixura, is a good option. It’s a good idea to ask at your Magaluf hotels for recommended local restaurants where you can try these dishes.

Another popular sausage is Botifarrons, a type of blood sausage which is often roasted, and eaten with many different dishes. Sobrassada is a meaty dish you’ll find everywhere here and is a pork sausage made from raw, cured pork meat and fat, and seasoned with paprika and salt. It was originally prepared as part of the autumnal pig slaughter, and remains to be made this way even now.

Seafood is very popular here and it’s worth tracking down some Calamars Farcits, or stuffed squid. The squid is filled with pork meat, garlic, wine and cloves, and you’ll often find ingredients such as almonds or bitter chocolate used in this as well. Peix Escabetxat is a dish of fried fish which has been left to cool and marinated in oil, vinegar and onion. Cooked in aromatic herbs and sauces, Mallorcan snails are called Caragols.

Whether you’re staying at Alcudia, Magaluf, or Palma hotels, you’ll be sure to find traditional restaurants close by, where you can try these much-loved dishes. It’s well worth being daring and trying something new and you’re sure to be pleasantly surprised.
